Elle Magazine, one of the numerous offsprings of the famous Hachette Filippachi group, is one of the most prestigious decoration magazines anywhere and Shanghai is no ex-ception. Although younger than its foreign counterparts, it was able to create it’s own identity. A few months after her arrival in Shanghai, at the time of the launch of their first issue, “A Summer in Shanghai”, Olivia Gurdjian was contacted by Alain Deroche, the Hachette Filipacchi marketing manager, to meet the Elle Chief Editor. He offered Olivia the position of consultant to help explain to the local editorial department how the French Elle works, insights into French culture, fashion trends etc. Since October 2006, Olivia works in collaboration with Sophie Liu, the social editor, through regular meetings. Be-cause this position didn’t exist before, there is complete freedom of action and Olivia Gurdjian and Sophie Liu can arrange their meetings according to their questions, interests and collaborate in a productive and interesting way. Olivia’s first work in Shanghai was to write an article for them about Qian Gang, a very graphical international painter. Olivia’s work for Elle Deco also involves searching for the more originally designed, and well decorated places downtown with the help of her friends from Vinyl, one of the most fa-mous interior design and architecture companies in Shanghai.
